2000 - The Structure Over Menokin Built

In order to preserve the Menokin ruin from the elements from above, an over-structure was built over the remains of the house in 2000.  It was a massive project funded by Menokin’s first grant from the Commonwealth of Virginia 22 years ago, and stands in place to this day.

Interestingly, as a double-sided coin would have it, the over-structure does alter the original airflow that would have occurred when the original inhabitants lived in the house.

Erecting the Structure over the Ruin in 2000

The over-structure will most likely be removed when the project enters its final phase in 2025.  Removing the assemblage will be a major project with several engineers harnessing large equipment to dismantle it properly.

These are vintage photos showing some of the action when the over-structure was put in place in 2000, followed by a long shot of the recent complete restoration of the South Wall this year with the over-structure still serving its purpose each day.
