“The American Indian Heritage Trail” featured Dr. Lauren McMillan, UMW professor of historic preservation, Nicholas Minor, King George Director of County Economic Development and Tourism, plus a University of Mary Washington student and a member of the Patawomeck Tribe took place.

This lively discussion examines how preservation of historical landscapes benefits tourism and empowers communities. It also considers how trips interpret cultural landscapes without boundaries while driving enthusiasts learn more about the region and seek out new places.

Dr. Lauren McMillan is an assistant professor in the Department of Historic Preservation at the University of Mary Washington, where she teaches North American archaeology, material culture theory, general historic preservation courses, and introduction to architectural history. Many of her classes focus on public interpretations and perceptions of history, aimed at broadening and diversifying the field of preservation. Lauren’s main research interest is the time period right before, during, and after European contact and colonization in Virginia, focusing on Native-Anglo-African interactions in the early 17th century. 


Nicholas is the Director of Economic Development and Tourism at King George County. His role leads and directs marketing through creative messaging and returns on investment. Nick values partnerships with cultural heritage organizations and the tourism these alliances stimulate. He also serves on the boards of the Rappahannock Community College Foundation and the Gladys P. Todd Academy. His prior work with the Fredericksburg Regional Alliance as a Communications & Research Manager, built on his skills in digital and internal communications and economic development. Nicholas is a graduate of Germanna Community College.
