2002-2006 - Surveys at Menokin

During the span of decades, many studies were done at Menokin ranging from archeological to geological to architectural analyses of the ruin and landscape.  All of these studies would inform the Menokin Foundation of what avenues may be taken to prepare the site for preservation for the long term.  2002-2006 was an especially busy time of survey activity, including several archeology studies. The studies are too numerous to post in their entirety in this post.

Masonry samples being taken at the Menokin Ruin

A detailed timeline of archeology done at Menokin over the span of a couple years may be found here.  It clearly illustrates how diligent archeological studies must be completed before even one stone is removed from the ruin, or the landscape is altered in any way.

To this day, archeology and masonry studies remain at the center of what we do at Menokin, as evidenced by our close collaboration with the VA Department of Historic Resources, who assists and approves any work to be done at Menokin only after archeological vetting has been completed.
