The Remembrance Structure at Menokin was built in memoriam to those persons enslaved at Menokin. The structure rest above of the archaeological footprint of an 18th century field slave dwelling. This was rediscovered by archeologists at Menokin in 2003.

Descendants of the enslaved persons at Menokin who attended First Descendant’s Day were given a tour of the dwelling by Kiana Wilkerson, the Descendant Research Associate at Menokin. Kiana shared the story of its origin, interpretation, design process, and documents about the enslaved people on the property, as well as answering questions descendants might have had about the structure and the landscape.
