SPEAKER SERIES & BOOK SIGNING: An Archaeological History of the Powhatan Landscape

April 18, 2018 - 04:00 PM / 06:00 PM

4037 Menokin Road, Warsaw VA 22572

804-333-1776

Speaker: Martin Gallivan

An associate professor of anthropology at the College of William and Mary, Gallivan’s research focuses on the archaeology and culture history of Native societies in the Chesapeake. Starting from the premise that scholars’ attention to the English colonial arrival at Jamestown has concealed a deeper history of Native communities, this lecture traces the American Indian past in Tidewater Virginia from the spread of forager-fishers to the colonial era Powhatan chiefdom.
