Two Guides Explore Natural Menokin

Woodland Trail Guide

The Woodland Trail Guide takes visitors along the quarter-mile trail to Cat Point Creek. While walking in this riparian forest, part of the Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge, learn about the birds at Menokin, the leaves of three (let them be!), the mysterious stone chimney, and how to tell what animals are nearby by looking at their tracks.

This engaging guide was created by Master Naturalists Jann Malone (researcher and writer) and Mike Steele (artist and designer) as a volunteer project for the Menokin Foundation and the Northern Neck chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists.

The Trees of Menokin Guide

This guide focuses on the many tree species that dot the Menokin property and compliments the Woodland Trail Guide. A map and key to the interpretive tree signs along the trail to Cat Point Creek provide visitors with information on 32 different species from Red Maple, to Spicebush, to Wax Myrtle to Pignut Hickory and Devil's Walkingstick! Information on noxious invasive species supplements the guide.

This informative guide was researched and written by Master Naturalists Gail Sigler, Pam Narney and Langley Lewis, with Native Plant Society member Earline Walker, as a volunteer project for the Menokin Foundation and the Northern Neck chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists. Mike Steele was artist and designer. Special thanks to Charlie Knoeller, forester to Richmond and Westmoreland Counties.
